Since 1995, Read Santa Clara has helped adults strengthen their basic literacy and English language skills, enabling them to achieve their goals as lifelong learners, family members, workers, and community members.
In fiscal year 2024-25, Read Santa Clara served 201 adult learners, with 88% of them achieving a goal they had set for themselves. We thank our 65 volunteers who gave 3887 hours to support Read Santa Clara's mission of building a community of readers.
Read Santa Clara offers four literacy services:
Adult Literacy
Read Santa Clara offers free tutoring for adults who can speak English but need help with basic reading, writing, or math skills. Trained volunteer tutors help adult learners work on their goals, such as reading to children, getting a job, understanding health information, passing the citizenship test and getting more involved in the community.
Family Literacy
Adult learners with children in their lives can join Families for Literacy (FFL). The program helps families learn together through fun monthly family literacy events at the library. The program also offers family literacy outreach at six state preschool classes in four school sites in Santa Clara.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Read Santa Clara provides ESL services for adults who speak little to no English. The program equips adult learners with the language skills necessary to communicate confidently in everyday situations. Adult learners are referred to our program through our community partners.
