Volunteer as a Tutor

Read Santa Clara Tutors:
  • are 18 years of age or older
  • speak English fluently
  • are proficient in reading and writing English at a high school level or above
  • have a high school diploma or equivalent, or a college degree
  • complete fingerprint clearance and other requirements
  • participate in 10 hours of free tutor training on Zoom (no prior teaching experience necessary)
  • tutor 2 hours a week for 6 months or more
  • submit monthly tutoring reports
  • are patient, flexible, and kind
  • have the joy in partnering with their learners to meet literacy goals, both big and small 

These are the first steps in the intake process for volunteer tutors:

  •   attend an orientation session
  •   complete a self-reflection form
  •   turn in a writing sample

If staff determine that this opportunity is a good fit for you, you'll be invited to complete the City of Santa Clara's volunteer application and attend 10 hours of tutor training (over Zoom). After fingerprint clearance is received, you'll join our team of dedicated volunteer tutors.
